I was watching an 18 month old take a toy away from my one year old and the mom of the offending child was reprimanding the kid saying "remember, we need to share".
When was the last time as an adult was the last time we were reminded that we needed to share?
Why should I share? I live in a society where it is imperative that I don't share. The economy is based on not sharing. People might lose jobs if I shared.
Who would it be to tell me to share? The government? Which one, state?, local? Federal, All? What about the church? When was the last time you heard a sermon on sharing?
Who should I share with? What should I share.
Isn't it strange that the freedom that America offers people has an economic system that promotes greed? And that if Americans were less greedy it would damage our economy, yet greed is fundamentally against the way of God.
I am not suggesting that capitalism is inherently evil. I would argue that it is the best system to allow for the freedom for people to choose what and how they want to use their money both good and bad with out a ruling government to get in the way. I just think it is so interesting that so many Christians are so pro-capitalism, yet it has aspects that are at the very core are against Gods ways.
How would the year of Jubilee be seen by a capitalist?

LOL - we don't *make* our children share - interesting, there are many different approaches to this issue from the parenting side of things, that could stem from the parents mental affiliations and core values and beliefs.
ReplyDeleteThis post is a good statement on this subject... and there are soooo many other examples of this sort of thing in our everyday lives!
Many parents get their 'sayings' that they say to their children from their church, from their parents, from their caregivers to their children. "Remember we have to share" is a common thing said to children by day care workers and the like. (church nurseries, grandparents, and anyone who has heard people say things like that - even on TV or through other media) My comment is that so many people just 'say it' and don't even think of the implications, or the roots or even what the effect will be on the child's mental development. For me? I like to find a scripture to base anything I say to my children on. If I can't? I say what seems right for that moment, based on the scriptures that 'I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against God' and I have to say -- more times than not... what comes out of my mouth seems counter cultural. And why am I surprised at that? I guess I don't like going against the grain. But to raise children in this world for Christ, for God, or just even morally upstanding citizens, we will probably have to 'go against the grain' the trick is knowing the grain, and knowing when to go against it I guess.
And I soo have wished as a consumer for a year of Jubilee...many times in my life! LOL but not as a company owner or lender...only as a consumer!
